This month’s installment features TROUBLE IN MIND by Alice Childress. A scathing indictment of racism in American commercial theatre, TROUBLE IN MIND tells the story of Wiletta Mayer, an African-American actress cast in a “progressive” play about racism by a white author. The play-within-the-play turns out to be anything but progressive, both in terms of its script and rehearsal environment. Written in 1955, this seldom-performed classic is light years ahead of its time.
